This is a very special garden for many reasons. Dedicated to waking every sense, the Delta Garden was born of one woman’s determination to provide the best possible experience for the differently abled and made possible with help from many people. When her daughter Karen suffered brain damage following vaccination Eileen Brophy campaigned to get day care facilities in Carlow, and the garden became the next growing edge of her care initiative.

Delta’s interlinked gardens, opened in 2007 and inspired by Eileen’s visit the National Garden Exhibition Centre in Wicklow , are part of a total concept providing training ,care and respite facilities for people with special needs . They are also a wonderful source of ideas for all, with gardens designed by some of the top names in Irish gardening.

Mary Reynold’s 2003 Chelsea Gold Medal ‘Stolen Child Garden,’ a sanctuary of water and wild plants, is recreated there. Gordon Lebetter’s woodland and water garden is full of the rushing sound of a cascading waterfall.

Jimi Blake’s prairie style planting changes from brilliant drifts of tulips in spring to whispering stands of knautias, grasses and eryngiums in summer, while Rachel Doyle’s garden with its dramatic fountain with a floating ball of marble plays with each of the five senses, with tasty vegetables, scented plants, water sounds, textured materials and colourful sights.

The sheer contrast between the different sections, a formal rose garden with a giant ring of water at the centre or a concentric garden of gravel rock and bamboos makes each experience more vivid.

There are lots of features to delight children: splashy, musical fountains, giant stone garden clippers and living tunnels woven from willow. The adjoining garden centre offers cheerful bedding plants and a special hanging basket service.

Open Mon –Fri 9.00 to 17.00 Sat and sun 12.00 – 17.00 Closed weekends in Jan and Feb.
