Pat Dillon is a gardener with attitude, a lovely attitude for he believes that gardens should be for everyone. This is a garden to interest the entire family from toddlers to grandparents. Where else would you find a fairy ring, a magic tree, all manner of feathered and furry creatures and a great collection of clematis and roses, all in the one spot?
And this is a place where vegetables are stars. Green fingered Pat has been growing them for 47 years, his plot supplies the Dillon family for 12 months of the year and he is happy to share knowledge and tips.
The garden flows informally into different areas, a cottage garden, sweeping lawns with beds of roses and shrubs skirted in box, a tranquil damp garden where rogersias, primulas and hostas flourish. In addition there is a gravel garden planted with roses, clematis and cheerful dahlias, and a vegetable garden guarded by a turkey who gets very upset at the mention of Christmas.
In the heart of the plan is a white and silver summerhouse garden where curtains of R ‘Frances E. Lester’ hang from pergolas and C‘Paul Farges’ and R‘Francois Juranville’ have clambered up silver birches. Around the garden are eye-catching displays of clematis and roses, C ‘Prince Charles’, C Arabella, ‘Etoile Violette’, R‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk’ and ‘Felicité et Perpetue.’
For the adventurous there are encounters with furry friends on walks adjacent to the garden leading to paddocks and to picnic spots. And then there are the special seasonal events, there is Santa’s Village for a pre- Christmas outing and a Halloween special to supply a thrill of fear with ghost tunnels, spooks and for grown ups who want to have the living daylights scared out of them an adult only tour . Altogether a great place for a family outing.
